Free and Low-Cost Lab Work Options

Written by a spoonie, for spoonies 💜

Labs are expensive. Here's how to get them done without paying full price — or without insurance at all.

Direct-to-consumer lab services

These let you order labs yourself without a doctor's order. Useful for tracking your own markers, getting baseline data, or accessing tests your doctor won't order.

**Quest Diagnostics (questhealth.com)** - Order directly online, pay cash price, go to any Quest location - Offers many of the standard chronic illness panels (ANA, CBC, CMP, inflammatory markers) - Prices vary — typically $30-80 per panel

**Labcorp OnDemand (ondemand.labcorp.com)** - Same concept as Quest, different network - Worth comparing prices — they vary by test

**Walk-In Lab (walkinlab.com)** - Broker service that lets you compare prices across labs - Sometimes cheaper than going directly to Quest or Labcorp

Community health centers and health fairs

  • Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) provide services on a sliding scale based on income. Find one at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov
  • Health fairs — often offered at churches, community centers, and employer events — sometimes include basic labs for free or low cost
  • Some pharmacy chains offer basic health screenings at low cost

Important notes

  • Direct-to-consumer labs can be used by your doctor even if they didn't order them — bring your results to appointments
  • Some tests (like certain specialized autoimmune panels) may only be orderable through a physician
  • If you have any insurance, compare the out-of-pocket cost to the direct-pay price before ordering

When to use direct-to-consumer labs

Good for: tracking markers you already know, getting a baseline before an appointment, checking for deficiencies

Less ideal for: initial workups where you need a doctor's interpretation, anything that might require urgent follow-up

Your data belongs to you. These services exist to give you access to it. 💜
